as we progress further in our study of the human body, you will be amazed at the complexity of the muscular system. many hours of studying the neuromuscular junction and how muscles contract will pay off big time when we advance to the next unit: the nervous system. by now you should realize how interdependent the organ systems of the body are, and a strong foundation in the muscular system will be crucial to your success in mastering knowledge of the nervous system.
Like THE SKELETAL SYSTEM UNIT, THERE WILL BE TWO MAJOR SETS OF ASSESSMENTS: ONE FOR THE PHYSIOLOGY OF HOW THE MUSCULAR SYSTEM COORDINATES WITH THE NERVOUS SYSTEM TO PRODUCE MOVEMENT, AND ONE FOR THE ANATOMY OF THE MUSCLES. in this unit students will not only be expected to know certain muscles, but also what action those muscles perform. students must demonstrate a thorough understanding of the terms agonist, antagonist, and synergist. students will also be expected to provide examples of muscle groups that fall into each of these categories. pathology of the muscular system will also be examined, along with the most commonly prescribed pharmaceuticals to treat those diseases.
North Carolina Standard Course of Study Essential Standards
Goal 9: To understand the structure, function and pathology of the muscular system.
9.1 The student will be able to list the major functions of the muscular system.
9.2 The student will be able to identify through diagram, microscope image or model, the major structural features of skeletal, visceral and cardiac muscle tissue.
9.3 The student will be able to compare and contrast skeletal, visceral and cardiac muscle, including cellular attributes, innervation, location and functions.
9.4 The student will be able to describe the physiological aspects of a muscle contraction at the cellular level.
9.5 The student will be able to describe the energetics/metabolism of muscle activities including aerobic exercise, anaerobic exercise, white fibers, red fibers, and the role of ATP.
9.6 The student will be able to identify the levels of organization within a muscle and the parts of a muscle
9.7 The student will be able to identify by diagram or model, the major muscles of the body.
9.8 The student will be able to describe the actions of the major muscles.
9.9 The student will show an understanding of the effects of hereditary and environmental factors, as well as, aging on the skeleton.
9.10 The student will be able to identify the causes, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of major diseases of the muscular system.

This is about the best muscle app for the iphone I can find. It does cost $3.99 for the app, but you can remove/add layers of muscle and pin information about each muscle. Included in the app is the ability to rotate and see the muscles from all views. If you click on the muscle, the origin and insertion of the muscle come up. Click here to access the app.
