Unit 12: reproductive system
in this unit we will focus on the male reproductive system, including the anatomy and function of the various organs, how sperm is produced, and trace the path of sperm throughout the body. we will also include an examination of the female reproductive system, including the anatomy and function of the organs, and how the ovarian cycle works with the uterine cycle each month. we will conclude this unit with a brief overview of embryonic development and delivery of the fetus.
North Carolina Standard Course of Study
Goal 17: To understand the structure, function and pathology of the reproductive system.
17.1 The student will be able to list the major functions of the reproductive system.
17.2 The student will be able to identify through diagram, dissection or model, the major organs of the male and female reproductive system.
17.3 The student will demonstrate an understanding of the cellular aspects of the female reproductive system including the production of ova .
17.4 The student will be able to describe the female menstrual cycle including average duration, phases, and hormones that regulate the cycle and female sex characteristics.
17.5 The student will demonstrate an understanding of the production of sperm and the hormones that regulate male sex characteristics.
17.6 The student will be able to describe the major events in the development of a fertilized egg.
17.7 The student will show an understanding of the effects of hereditary and environmental factors, as well as, aging on reproductive capabilities.
17.8 The student will be able to identify the causes, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of major diseases of the reproductive system.
